At The Wedding Dress, we are often asked lots of questions. Below, we have compiled a list of the questions that we are asked most frequently.

FAQ's

  • How far in advance of the wedding should I start looking for my dress?

It is never too early to start looking for your dress! We have brides who come to us two years before their wedding, fall in love with their dream dress and place their order. We store your dress for as long as you need us to, right up until the day before your wedding, so don’t worry if you think it’s too early to order. We recommend that you order your dress at least nine months before the big day to allow for delivery, fittings and any alterations you may need. Shopping for your dress early enables you to choose and make plans for the rest of your wedding party.

  • What is the price range of your dresses?

Our dresses range greatly in price so that all budgets are catered for. Please don’t feel embarrassed to tell us if you have a budget in mind. This prevents situations where you fall in love with a dress outside of your price range as we will be able to show you dresses within the budget you have.

  • What sizes are the dresses in your store?

We stock a range of sample dresses in many different sizes. Our designers cater for ladies of all shapes and sizes, from 0-30+. Don’t worry too much about sizes as there are many ways in which we will make the dresses fit you when you try on. If you have any concerns, please give us a call before you come in to see us and we will put your mind at ease.

  • Do I need an appointment?

An appointment is not always necessary. As Saturday tends to be our busiest day, we would recommend that you do book an appointment so that you’re not disappointed if we can’t fit you in. We like you to have our undivided attention so if you don’t book an appointment, be prepared that you might have to share your time with another bride, or may have to wait if we have a bride with an appointment in when you arrive.

  • How long will my appointment last?

A bridal appointment should be exciting and make you feel special. We pride ourselves on giving you our full attention during your appointment. If it is your first appointment with us, you should allow around an hour and half. This ensures that you are able to try on a range of dresses without feeling rushed.

Shopping for your wedding gown is not like shopping for any other clothes. We are trained to give you expert advice on the designers, the fit of the gowns and the fabrics. It is our job to help you to find the dress of your dreams. You should not be offended or embarrassed when we come into the fitting room to dress you. It is our responsibility to make you feel special, and to ensure that the delicate fabrics of our dresses remain in perfect condition for the next bride. Enjoy the extra attention!

  • How should I prepare for my appointment?

It would be advisable to look at our designers and get an idea of the dresses we stock. Find some photographs of styles you like and bring them with you; we may have something in store that is similar for you to try on.

You should get into role as a bride before your appointment; allow yourself time to have a leisurely soak in the bath, wear neutral coloured underwear, including a strapless bra where possible. We do have shoes available for you to try on with dresses, but you may want to bring a comfortable pair of heels with you.

We ask that if you do wear make-up that it is not heavy, as you won’t be able to see what tone of fabric suits you best. We also ask that you DO NOT wear fake tan when trying on our dresses; we need to protect our gowns so that every bride tries on clean samples rather than tan stained ones. It is advisable that on your wedding day itself you have a natural glow or a light spray tan, as any tan (unless natural!) will rub off onto your dress, particularly around the arm area, and will show up on your photos.

  • Who should I bring with me when I come in to try wedding dresses?

Ideally, you should bring your Mom and one or two trusted friends or family at the most. Choosing your dream wedding gown is ultimately your decision and one of the biggest choices you’ll have to make. By having too many people there whilst you are making that decision, you run the risk of having too many opinions flying around. It is much easier to listen to your own head and heart without a crowd in the room. You can always bring others along at a later stage if you want them to see your dress.

  • Can I take photographs?

No. Unfortunately, we have had to stop allowing people taking photographs in our showroom. It is sad that we can no longer allow this but as you will be aware there are a great deal of companies online that try to sell cheap copies of designer gowns. Obviously, we need to keep small companies like ourselves in business along with keeping our designers happy. Once you have ordered your dress, then of course we will allow photographs to be taken.

  • I plan to lose weight – how will I know what size to order?

Be honest and talk to us about your plans. If you are planning to lose weight before your big day, set yourself a realistic target. Wedding dresses are very flattering garments and hide those areas you’re not happy about. Considering how long dresses take to arrive, you’ll need to remember that if you lose weight after the dress is ordered, you may need considerable alterations for which there will be an additional cost.

  • How do I pay for my dress?

We ask that you pay 50% of the balance to cover your deposit on the day that you order your dress. When your dress arrives, we will invite you into store to view your gown and try it on again, and ask that you pay the remaining 50% at that time. For brides who wish to follow a payment plan, these are available on request; just ask!

  • How long will my dress take to arrive?

Each designer has their own lead times on delivery. Most dresses arrive within 16-22 weeks after the order has been placed, however this can vary during busy times of the year and holidays.

  • When should I buy my accessories for the big day?

It is advisable to order your veil and tiara when you order your dress. This is because you will be able to try them on whilst you are wearing the dress; once you’ve left the store, you won’t be able to judge an exact match of fabrics and won’t be able to see the full picture. Of course, you could leave this until your first fitting when your dress arrives if you’d rather have a look around before making that final decision.

  • Will I need fittings and alterations?

All brides need fittings in their dress before the big day. 99.9% of our brides will need some form of alterations made to their dress on order for it to fit perfectly. It may be taking an inch off the length, nipping in at the waist or bust, altering the neckline or even adding straps or sleeves. We work with a wonderful seamstress who prides herself on the perfectionism! All alterations are to be paid in cash. Talk to us about the cost of the alterations your dress may need; we can’t give you an exact price until you’ve had a full fitting, but we should be able to give you an idea of how much it will cost.

  • What will I need to bring with me to fittings?

When you come in for fittings, you will need to have the shoes you will wear on the day of your wedding in order for us to check the length of your dress. You should also bring along the bra/lingerie you will wear under your dress so that the bodice fits you in the correct places. Your bridal lingerie should be well fitted, supportive and not visible through your gown.

  • I haven’t left enough time to order my dress – what should I do?

Firstly, don’t panic! We have many options available for those brides who don’t have much time before their big day. We stock a selection of gowns that you can buy from our rails and some of our designers will get a dress made and sent to us within 12 weeks. Talk to us, we are certain we can help you.
